Jean-Francois Merieau “Les Hexagonales” and Altovinum Evodia
“Les Hexagonales” Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2013
The Merieau family has owned the Vineyards of the Vaudons Woods for three generations. Jean Francoise Merieau took over the estate in 2000, creating a more diverse environment by studying the soils and developing the vineyard as fully organic. The vineyard sits on the left bank of the Cher River, making it ideal climate for Sauvignon Blanc. Merieau’s “Hexagonales” Range is a series of entry level wines that are simple and easy on the wallet including this Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec (or Cot, as they call it in the Loire), Cabernet Franc and a Rose. This Sauvignon Blanc is clean, balanced and has beautiful acidity and white flowers and citrus dominate the nose.
From the Spanish region of Calatayud, Altovinum Evodia is some the most compelling Garnacha ever made. At an elevation of over 3000 ft., the vines are located in some of the highest vineyards in the entire country. Winemaker Jean Marc Lafage makes a wine with loads of gripping flavors creating a perfectly balanced wine with lots of black fruit, spice and a touch of smoky wood. The wine pairs well with grill meats, stews, and hearty blue cheese.
