The Best Sommelier in the World

paolo bassoSwiss-Italian Sommelier Paolo Basso, posing here with a Jeroboam of Chateau Peyrabon 2010, was named The Best Sommelier of the World last month after competing against 53 other world-renown sommeliers at the 14th annual competition held by Association de la Sommelerie Internationale (ASI) in Japan.

Basso was educated in the art of wine service at the Swiss Sommelier Association School, and started his career working in 1 and 2 Michelin Star restaurants. He has received a multitude accolades for his sommelier skills, including Best Sommelier of Switzerland 1997, Best Sommelier of Europe 2010 and was the runner up for Best Sommelier of the World three years ago. When he is not traveling the world winning sommelier competitions, Basso stays busy running his own wine consulting company called Ceresio Vini, acting as Wine Director at Conca Bella Restaurant near Lake Como and judging wine tastings, like the “Decanter World Wine Award” while also giving lectures on wine.

To congratulate Signore Basso on his achievement, Millesma sent the champion a Jeroboam Chateau Peyrabon 2010.

Chateau Peyrabon 2010 scored 91 by Wine Spectator

pey-fChateau Peyrabon produced an excellent vintage in 2010 which received an impressive score of 91 from Wine Spectator. James Molesworth praised the wine and described it as having a “gutsy frame of roasted apple wood and a full-bodied core of plum, boysenberry and black currant fruit.” Chateau Peyrabon 2010, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, is ready to drink now but can also be aged and enjoyed until 2020.

Situated in the appellation of Haut-Medoc, Chateau Peyrabon is a cru bourgeois with a strong personality. Its current owner Patrick Bernard, owner of Millésima, fell under the spell of the charming 50 hectare estate of promising gravel terroir in 1998. Since then, M. Bernard and his team, led by Xavier Michelet, are passionately dedicated to creating authentic wines that are elegant, silky, and marked by their freshness and fruity character – typical of an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau Peyrabon vineyards are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% of Petit Verdot.
