Top Saint Julien chateau Ducru Beaucaillou surprised negociants and wine merchants yesterday by releasing its prices last night at 6PM Bordeaux time (7PM in London).
Owned by the Borie family, who also run Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Haut-Batailley, this Second Growth wine was praised by critics as one of the best wines of the 2010 vintage. Some of its top scores include Robert Parker (96-98), Jancis Robinson (18), Decanter (19), and James Suckling (99-100).
Ducru’s 2010 is extremely impressive and promising. Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, this Second Growth has a striking, expressive nose of ripe black fruits which have reached ideal maturity. The aroma is already complex, suggesting black plum, cherry, and boysenberry. The wine is extraordinarly expansive on the palate, very generous with notable complexity, ending with a subtle touch of high caliber new oak. This is a full-bodied, rather powerful Ducru which does not lose its customary grace and harmony. – Roger Bohmrich, Master of Wine
Ducru’s second wine, Croix de Beaucaillou, was also released – with a brand new label designed by Jade Jagger, daughter of Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones). Ducru owner Bruno Borie liked the connection between the Rolling Stones and the name “Beaucaillou” which means ‘beautiful stones’ in French. Borie believes the new label will help the wine establish its own identify rather than be just a second choice to Ducru. The wine shows restraint from barrel, with subtle black fruits balanced by very fresh acidity and a grip of tannin. It is a very good second wine. – Roger Bohmrich, Master of Wine
