Lytton Springs 2014
Perhaps my favorite producer in California, Ridge Vineyards produces outstanding Zinfandel blends and Cabernets. With the legendary Paul Drapper at the helm, the estate first gained recognition for their 1971 Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon when it placed fifth at the Judgment of Paris wine tasting in 1976. Their single estate Zinfandels are revered for their structure and ageing potential. The Lytton Springs comes from 100 year old zinfandel vines, displaying a nose reminiscent of blueberry pie, lavender and clove. On the palate, remarkable fruit and freshness lingers on the persistent finish. Grab a bottle of Ridge and taste for yourself, just look for the vintage notes or the ingredient list on the back of every bottle of Ridge wines!
Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN produces Tempranillo based reds in Rioja from vines averaging 60 years of age. Divided into 24 plots the vineyards enjoy a unique combination of climate, soil type and training, producing grapes with great personality. The soils are poor and stony, with very little rainfall, producing low yields. Following sustainable viticulture practices, the grapes are hand harvested and fermented in new oak barrels. With notes of ripe black cherry, vanilla and baking spices with good depth, this red is best with beef stews, spiced dishes and firm cheeses.
