Domaine Comte Abbatucci

Domaine Comte Abbatucci is one of the oldest vineyards in Corsica. The name famous, given that General Jean-Charles Abbatucci from Ajaccio was a hero of the French Revolution and comrade to Napoleon Bonaparte. Direct decedent, Antoine Abbatucci, president of the Chamber of Agriculture in Corsica in the 1960’s, noticed the farming lifestyles of the mountain villages were being abandoned as the villagers left the countryside for coastal towns. These old vines of indigenous varietals were left abandoned as more and more of the population left. In order to save these indigenous varietals, Antoine took cuttings of each important vineyard and planted the cuttings on his estate near his hometown Ajaccio, in a single plot of granite soil. By 1962, Antoine had 18 indigenous varietals planted in a single plot. Today his son, Jean-Charles Abbatucci continues the legacy, blending these native varietals into four different cuvees, each named after an ancestor.

The Development of Soil

Corsica

Located in the southern part of the island, the Domaine enjoys the beautiful scenery of the Taravo Valley. Covering an area of 18 hectares at an altitude of about a hundred meters, the nearby prehistoric sites reflect the ancestral past of this region. The soils consist of granitic and sandy hills, terroir of the indigenous grape varieties so dear to the grower. Here the estate grows a range grapes preserving the terroir and history of Corsica. Some of the grapes grown on the estate include Vermentinu, Nielluciu, Sciaccarello, Barbarossa, Carcajolu-Neru, Rossola Bianca, Bianccu Gentile, Genovese, Brustiano, Paga Debbiti, and Riminese.

Through Biodynamics

Jean- Charles Abbatucci has managed to brilliantly combine Corsican tradition and modernity of biodynamic viticulture. Using new techniques, he promotes the natural regeneration of the environment and soil. Thus, the vineyard adjusts itself to produce healthy, balanced and honest fruit, reflecting the subtle nuances of terroir. Hand harvested and fermented by indigenous yeasts, Jean-Charles uses a minimal approach. Following biodynamic processes, he allows his flock of sheep to graze freely in the vineyards. These practices are intended to take into account nature and soils, maintaining balance and the traditional methods of the Corsican vigneron.
