POE Wines: Burgundian Inspiration in Anderson Valley

“It is one of the most beautiful soulful places on earth. They make some of the most expensive wines on the planet, yet they are totally down to earth, humble, generous and welcoming.” Samantha Sheehan on Burgundy

Financier Samantha Sheehan experienced a revelation in Burgundy. Reveling in the distinct terroir and the unique Burgundian approach to life and to wine, she realized it was possible to bring the same appreciation for terroir to California. Turing her focus to the Anderson Valley, Sheehan’s POE Wines produces only single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that highlight the unique potential and complexity of Californian terroir.

Working closely with winemaker Jonathan Keyes, who also works at Outpost Wines with renowned winemaker Thomas Brown and got his start working at Sine Que Non, Sheehan has managed to bring the Burgundy philosophy to life in her California wines. Focusing on the quality and ripeness of the fruit, not just the numbers, the POE Wines are elegant and complex, subtle and intriguing. Produced using a champagne press and native yeasts they are a true representation of the best California has to offer.

The Wines of POE

  • Ferrington Vineyards Chardonnay 2012
  • Manchester Ridge Pinot Noir 2012
POE Ferrington Vineyards Chardonnay 2012 “The Chardonnay this year stands out for its purity and focus. The nose of white flowers, lemon oil, crushed rocks, and honey is enticing. This wine has beautiful bright acidity and envelopes the palate with flavors of peach, apricot skin, pear, quince and citrus. High-toned floral and stone fruit notes add lift on the linear, lengthy finish.”

POE Manchester Ridge Pinot Noir 2012 The Manchester Ridge is earthy and wild. There is an explosive array of aromatics including pine sap, earth, fresh herbs, flowers, pie spice and berries. On the palate is dark red cherry, rhubarb, plum, spice, with a freshness and structured acidity. The finish is long and generous. The 15% whole cluster gives the wine incredible complexity and hits of fresh herbs that should be picked for the kitchen. Smelling this wine immediately takes me to the vineyard, high in a forest on the Mendocino Ridge.”
