Onward Wines was launched by Faith Armstrong-Foster after several years working in the wine-making industry. The Johnson Family, owners of Onward’s heritage vineyard, Hawkeye Ranch, are fifth generation farmers with a strong sense of community and long-term commitment to sustainable production. The wines produced are 100% Pinot Noir, which thrives in the Redwood Valley’s cool-climate growing region. The Rosé of Pinot Noir bursts with lively acidity. The wine shows more complexity that usual due to the addition of 20% juice blend then finally maturing in neutral French Oak barrels.
Redwood Valley AVA has the highest percent of organically-grown acreage in California. In fact, Mendocino County boasts 32% of the state’s organic wine grape acreage.
Onward Hawkeye Ranch Pinot Noir is a great example the ‘Martini clone’ Pinot Noir. Dark fruits with a savory, earthy component, admirable balance and reasonable approachability make this a wonderful wine for food. Upon fermentation, the berries were cold soaked for seven days – a process which aids in color development and adds complexity. The wine was aged in 20% new French Oak barrels, with the balance aging in neutral French Oak barrels. The wine sat “on the lees” and gently stirred during its 12 months of cellaring to enhance palate weight and overall mouth-feel.
