A History of Art

With a long, complex and rich history Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Innovators, excellent wine makers and art enthusiasts, the Rothschild family has developed a reputation not only for their wine but as patrons of the arts. Every year since 1945 the Rothschild family has combined their love of both art and wine, consistently using modern art on their labels. They have featured the work of Lucian Freud, Picasso, and Jeff Koons among countless others. In this grand tradition Mouton-Rothschild has announced the 2011 label featuring the colorful and striking work of Guy de Rougemont.

The Artist

A member of the Academy des Beaux Arts de l’Institut de France, Guy de Rougemont, 78, is the first French artist to be featured on a Rothschild label since 2007. Known for not only his huge frescos, found in public places like the forecourt of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, he is also celebrated for his sculptures, polychrome columns and geometric, modern furniture. A long-time familiar of the Rothschild family, the artist has already completed a colonnade for the estate’s “Paintings for the Labels” exhibition.

Personally commissioned by Baroness Phillipine de Rothschild the new label features bold, vibrant and warm colors in the artist’s trademark sinuous and randomly undulating shapes. Intended to represent the evolution of the grapes during the wine making process the estate has said the art captures everything from “the clarity of vines in sunshine to the darkness of the cellars-all the stages of the birth of a great wine.”

2011 Mouton-Rothschild

Described by the estate as “a classic Bordeaux vintage, to be ranked among the finer, or perhaps the finest” the 2011 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (90%), Merlot (7%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). The deep robe of this wine hints at the aromas of ripe boysenberry, rich coffee, earthy truffle and black cherry. With ripe tannins and rich textures this opulent wine has a long and spicy finish.
